Quiz 6: What about luck?

I’m so sick of finishing near the money in this 5k tournament at Bodog… seriously… 4th time I’ve finished 30 or less from the money. Anyway, here’s one of the hands from that tournament.

You’re playing a $5000 multi-table online tournament. It’s more than midway through… only 180 of 402 players remain. Blinds are at $150/$300. You’ve been getting bad cards at a loose table (in other words, playing tight), but a recent turn of good cards has allowed you to rally and you now have slightly more than an average chip stack at $6500.

The player in MP1 (1st middle position) a few hands ago suffered a bad beat for most of his chips, but he’s been super aggressive and now has a chip stack of about $1600… you think he’s on tilt.

You get A Q UTG (immediately after the BB).

Question 6-1: What do you do?

You actually put in a raise 3x the BB to $900. MP1 calls and everyone else folds, including the SB and BB. Two players. The pot is at 2250.

Flop comes out 4 4 2.

Question 6-2: What do you do?

You actually bet all-in.

MP1 calls and shows 5 2. The turn and the river continue to miss you and lose the pot and $1600 of your cash.

6-1: I was making the same raise amount of 3x the BB every time I did raise… like I said, I was mostly card dead, so my VP$IP was like 20% or something… I thought making a bigger raise than normal would’ve been bad for that hand and future hands.

Although, in retrospect, I might have made a raise enough to make Mr. Tilt to commit all or nothing… given the situation and figuring that he would call me.

6-2: There is no way to think that someone who called a re-raise is holding a 2… try to take the pot right here… he’s just going to bet if you check and you’ll have to face a tough decision.

6-1: Obviously you’re going to play this hand, so the only question is to raise or just call. If there’d been a lot of steal attempts from late position I’d just call with AQs then stick in a big reraise. If there haven’t been though then I’d stick in a 3-4x the BB raise here which I would have done here.

6-2 Since he called a sizable raise preflop it’s extremely unlikely that he’ll hold a duece or four, so we shouldn’t worry about that. That said, his most likely holdings are now either a couple of face cards or a medium pair (we raised UTG so he probably would give us credit for a hand and muck a low pair, and would have probably reraised us with a high pair). If he does have the facecards (more likely than the medium pair) then we’re best now unless he has AK (unlikely as he’d have most likely reraised with that) and we can bet with confidence. However if he has a medium pair it’s now a stron-looking overpair so we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. Since it’s a rainbow flop (no risk of flush draws so no need to make a bigger than 1/2 pot bet to dent him the odds for a flush draw) I’d make about a halfpot continuation bet here and see what happens. There’s a good chance that he whiffed and will fold, and we have outs if he has a medium pair and calls.

Also as a note, I really dislike the all-in move here as that’s basically screaming a weaker hand. If we really had a high pair (which we want to represent) then we’d either make a smaller bet (to suck in more money) or slowplay them, we certainly wouldn’t apply pressure on him for all his chips and greatly increase the liklihood of him folding.

As another note, our opponent of course played this hand terribly. It’s a sizable raise UTG, we’re not messing around with nothing, fold your pathetic 5-2 (especially because we’ve already a good amount of money it’s highly unlikely that you could push us out because of the pot odds we’d be getting).

Part 1 Raise it about 3-5x the BB.

Part 2 That flop missed you completely, however since your opponent called a substantial raise preflop so he most likely has either a couple of face-cards (unpaired) or a medium pair. If he had AK or a premium pocket pair he’d have reraised preflop. If he had a low pair he’d probably have folded, you put in a solid raise UTG, you’re obviously not messing around. Also there’s a lot more face card combinations then medium pairs so that’s probably what he has in which case you’re at worst tied since he probably can’t have AK and it’s a rainbow flop. So the only thing you’re worried about is a medium pair, which is plausible. I think you should make continuation bet here and put him all in here. If he has anything less then a medium pair he’ll fold (and if he calls with a medium pair you’ll still have 6 outs twice) and even some of those he’ll fold as you’re bets are consistent with a big pocket pair.

Also of course his play was abysmal.
