I’m stealing this from directly from Professional No-Limit Hold ‘em: Volume I (a book that I suggest you pick up by the way).
The reason I stole this quiz is that I think it provides a good example of an important point which I will discuss in the comments.
You’re playing a $5/$10 no-limit game with everyone having about $2000.
You have A
Q
.
You open from middle position for $30. The cutoff calls. The button, a tight, aggressive player reraises to $120 total. The blinds fold. The pot is now $165.

Well, can we just get the worst move out of the way? Going all-in is a horrible play. You’re risking $1970 to win $165 pot. You might get the button to wonder if you have pocket AAs, but if the button calls, it’s nearly guaranteed that you’ll be way behind to something like AA, KK, or AK. Nothing less than that would be able to call very likely… but, like I said… you’re risking $1970 to win $165!
Calling is also a bad play (not as bad as all-in), but still bad. Let’s keep in mind that the button has been tight and now the button is re-raising with people left to act and you (the person that originally raised). Situations like that require that you give the button some respect.
If you flop pair, you’re out of position and in really bad shape against AA or AK. So, what are you going to do with top pair?
Mostly, you’re going to lose money.
Folding is really the only good option here. You’re not pot committed. You’ve gotten the information you need to know that your AQ is probably no good. Time to cut your loses and move on.
Don’t get stuck on strong looking hands. The strength of your hand is relative to the strength of the hands around you.
The biggest mistakes that new players make is playing weak hands out of position. Based on the information we have, here AQo is a weak hand.

I voted fold. AQ gets you in trouble out-of-position against a tight player.
My question to you is, what would you do with Q9 in this situation?

HA! Well… if it’s Q9, I push all in pre-flop. j/k
